Ed Karasek has been named the first head lacrosse coach in the history of Ursuline College. He will join the athletic department on August 27th and begin building a program that will make its intercollegiate debut in the spring of 2014.

He is a Northeast Ohio native and a graduate of Padua Franciscan High School. He played lacrosse for Mickey Cochrane at Bowling Green State University when the school was one of few institutions to offer a Division I program. After earning a Bachelor of Science degree in Business Administration from Bowling Green in 1970, Karasek completed the M.B.A. program at Northern Illinois University.

Karasek is no stranger to building women's lacrosse programs, having done so at Indiana Tech, a small private school in Fort Wayne, Ind. He was named head coach in 2008 and recruited 22 student-athletes to form the initial roster that began competing in the spring of 2010. In the program's first season, the Warriors went 14-7. An 18-4 season followed in 2011 and culminated in a National Women's Lacrosse League title. In 2012, Indiana Tech went 14-5 and captured the NWLL regular season crown with a 9-1 mark to improve his record at the school to 46-16 (.742).

His teams have excelled in the classrooms as well. In 2011, nine student-athletes won academic all-league honors, the most of any school in the conference. This past year, 10 members of the team were honored for having a grade point average of above 3.25.

"I'm really excited to build another program from scratch," Karasek said. "I've been through it once before and I think I can do an ever better job this time this time around. My goal is to establish a winning tradition in women's lacrosse at Ursuline College and I can't wait to get started."

The addition of lacrosse expands Ursuline's athletic department to include 11 sports.

"We are very excited about adding lacrosse and feel fortunate to have a coach of Ed's caliber to get the program started," said Athletic Director Cindy McKnight. "He's been through this process before and that will be a huge benefit. We hope he can duplicate the success he had at Indiana Tech – both in the classroom and on the playing field – at Ursuline College."
