CEDARVILLE, Ohio – Ursuline's Cassie Cripe, the Great Midwest Athletic Conference Freshman of the Year, scored in the 61st minute to help the fourth-seeded Arrows pull off a 1-0 upset over top-seeded Cedarville University in Thursday (Nov. 7) night's second Great Midwest Athletic Conference semifinal.
UC was playing on Thursday, in part, because of Cripe's overtime game-winner in the quarterfinal match against Trevecca Nazarene University last Saturday (Nov. 2).
The Arrows, now 12-7-1, advance to Saturday's (Nov. 9) championship match against
Davis & Elkins College. That game will be held at 12:30 p.m. in Cedarville and will be broadcast
here. D&E won Thursday's first semifinal, 2-1, over Alderson Broaddus University.
Cedarville (14-6) is eliminated after going 9-1 in the regular season and claiming the regular season title. Two of those wins came against Ursuline, proving how hard it is to beat a good team three times in a season.
The Lady Jackets outshot Ursuline 7-3 in the first period but where it mattered most – on the scoreboard – the two teams were equal at halftime. Cripe finally broke the scoreless tie at the 59:40 mark when she stole the ball from a CU defender and left-footed a rocket shot over the outstretched arms of Cedarville goalie Hanna Harris. Her shot ricocheted off the crossbar and rolled into the back of the net and then the Arrows hung on for dear life over the next half-hour.
Freshman goalie Helen Jazzar, named to the G-MAC's first team earlier in the day, made four saves in each period to total eight stops, one shy of her career-high that was set against the University of Charleston in the season opener on Sep. 5. Her counterpart and fellow freshman Harris was credited with one stop as the Lady Jackets outshot the Arrows, 14-7 (7-3 both periods). Tonight was Jazzar's second complete game shutout and the fourth she has played in during her freshman campaign.
The Lady Jackets won the first meeting between the two teams, 2-1, in Cedarville on Sep. 28. Ursuline held a 2-1 lead after 72 minutes in the second gathering in Pepper Pike on Oct. 19 but the Lady Jackets scored three late goals to pull out a 4-2 victory.
On Oct. 12, Davis & Elkins came to Pepper Pike and beat the Arrows 2-1 in overtime. Kaitlyn Buoni won it for the Senators off an assist from Emma Davis in the 95th minute.
