UNIVERSITY HEIGHTS, Ohio – Last year, Central State University beat Ursuline College three times by an average of 23.3 points per game. On Saturday (Jan. 11) evening, Shannon Sword's team showed how far it has come with a 90-69 beating of the Marauders.
The win snapped Ursuline's three-game losing skid and improved the team to 6-7 overall and an even 2-2 in Great Midwest Athletic Conference action. Central State slips to 4-5 and has lost its first three conference games of the season.
For the second consecutive game, five Arrows scored in double figures, led by 18 points from junior Emma Ricketts. Freshman Erica Huber chipped in 15, one more than classmate Tajanee Wells, and freshman Laney Lewis and junior Brianna Woods each went for 11.
Senior Shanade Bernard provided UC with a huge spark off the bench in her nine minutes of court time. She scored the first bucket of her Ursuline career in the first half and added six more second half points to finish with a career-high eight.
Ricketts also led Ursuline with eight rebounds as the Arrows won the battle of the boards by nine, 40-31. That fact becomes more impressive when you take into account that the Marauders entered Saturday with three of the top five rebounders in the conference. Huber and Lewis both pulled down seven rebounds as well and Huber added six assists.
Jasmine Cooper led Central State with 22 points and nine boards while Aryelle Covington (15) and Veronne Clark (10) also reached double digits in points.
The Arrows shot 52.9 percent (36-68) for their second best showing of the season. Of the 36 hoops, 23 were assisted on – the most this season.
Ursuline led by as many as 24 (34-10) in the first period before Central State chipped away to make it a 40-27 game at the intermission. The Marauders got within 10 at one point in the second half before UC built its lead back up to 24 before finally settling on a 21-point margin.
The Arrows will head to the road for two conference games next week, starting with Thursday's (Jan. 16) trip to Vienna, West Virginia, to take on
Ohio Valley University. Tip-off is set for 5:30 p.m.
