CLEVELAND, Ohio – Kentucky Wesleyan College was picked to win the Great Midwest Athletic Conference in the preseason poll and the Panthers showed why in Wednesday's (Jan. 22) 81-57 win over Ursuline College at Quicken Loans Arena, home of the NBA's Cleveland Cavaliers.
KWC, now winners in six of its last seven games, built a 39-21 lead at halftime and never looked back while improving to 12-5 overall and 7-1 in conference play. Ursuline had its three-game winning streak snapped and sits at 8-8 overall and 4-3 in the G-MAC.
The Arrows had a tough shooting day and connected on just 20 of 73 (27.4 percent) field goal attempts. KWC was 30-65 (46.2 percent) from the field and shot the ball well in the second period to the tune of 53.6 percent (15-28).
Kentucky Wesleyan outrebounded Ursuline 48-36 but UC committed three fewer turnovers (19-16).
Forwards Tajanee Wells and Emma Ricketts led UC with 14 points each and freshman point guard Erica Huber had 12 points to go with six boards and five assists.
Jordanne Gambill led the Panthers with a game-high 17 points on 6-8 (75 percent) shooting.
It won't get any easier for the Arrows with
Trevecca Nazarene University coming to town on Saturday (Jan. 25) for a 6:00 p.m. Great Midwest Athletic Conference contest at John Carroll University's
Tony DeCarlo Varsity Center.
