PEPPER PIKE, Ohio – Its early in the season but the Ursuline College soccer team picked up a big statement win on Saturday (Sep. 20) with a 4-1 victory over the guests from Trevecca Univeristy.
The Arrows, winners in four straight matches, are 5-1 overall and 2-0 in Great Midwest Athletic Conference play. Trevecca, fresh off of a 2-0 win over Cedarville University on Thursday (Sep. 18), is now 2-3 overall and 1-1 in the conference. The Trojans started their season with a loss and have flipped the result in each consecutive match since, which isn't good news for Wednesday's (Sep. 24) opponent, Carson-Newman University.
Ursuline jumped in front exactly 12:00 into the match when senior Paige Rowan scored her sixth goal of the young year. It came off a nice pass from junior linemate Vanessa Consiglio. Rowan has at least one point in all six of Ursuline's matches.
The Trojans tied the match three minutes and two seconds later when the UC defense gave the ball away and Lauren Winters came up with it and pushed it to Anna Hoffman who beat UC sophomore keeper Helen Jazzar for her fourth goal of the year.
UC answered in the 28th minute when sophomore Cassie Cripe headed home a corner kick off the foot of senior Anna Feitl. It was a beautiful ball from the left corner that landed right on Cripe's head, ultimately giving the Arrows a 2-1 lead at the break.
Freshman Emily Justus scored her first collegiate goal at 57:15 to widen the gap and then Cripe set up Consiglio, an all-conference and all-region pick a season ago, for her third goal of the year in the 64th minute to decide the final margin.
Jazzar made five stops in the game while Trevecca keeper Liz Denton, just a freshman, was credited with a lone stop. The Trojans took 13 shots in the match, four more than Ursuline.
Jason Kubbins' club will take a quick break from conference play on Wednesday (Sep. 24) when
Tiffin University visits Pepper Pike for a 3:30 p.m. match that can be heard on the
Ursuline College Sports Network.
